Bog Oak, Padauk, and Lapis Lazuli Cane
Bog Oak, Padauk, and Lapis Lazuli Cane
This ancient cane is stacked with lovely grain, colors, and a fascinating story. It has a Ukrainian Bog Oak handle, this wood is approximately 5,000 years old! Wood like this is called "sinker" wood. An oak tree lived a typical life span but when it died and fell it was covered in peat moss or fell into a bog, both of which create an oxygen deprived environment that perfectly preserved the wood. But the oak does absorb minerals from its surroundings and the result after thousands of years is a dark color. This bog oak is a dark warm grey. The shaft stands in stark contrast, its bright red padauk wood from Africa with a fine chatoyance - certainty an eye-catching piece. Complementing the red is a divider of amboyna burl, stacked with silvery aluminum layers. Finishing off the piece are 6 royal blue lapis Lazuli lapidary pins, a handsome stone from Afghanistan. Moderate in weight, maybe to the lighter end, great daily use cane. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
