Ancient Bog Oak Cane

$550.00

This ancient cane is modern in style but ancient in material - it has a Ukrainian Bog Oak handle and shaft. This wood is approximately 5,000 years old! Wood like this is called "sinker" wood. An oak tree lived a typical life span but when it died and fell it was covered in peat moss or fell into a bog, both of which create an oxygen deprived environment that perfectly preserved the wood. But the oak does absorb minerals from its surroundings and the result after thousands of years is a dark color. This bog oak is a dark warm grey. Ancient wood like this is very rare and difficult to find and is far more labor intensive to harvest than a standing tree. Despite being a non-renewable resource, ancient wood can actually be the most environmentally friendly timber available, no trees had to be cut down! The divider is different ancient wood, bog Red Gum wood from a river in Australia. Actual age is unknown, but judging by its pitch black color, estimated to be several thousand years. Finished with warm copper metal. Moderate in weight, nimble enough and enjoyable for long walks. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
